Maryland is one of the smallest and one of the most densely-populated US states. The economy of Maryland is based heavily on the state’s location — being near Washington, the government is among Maryland’s largest employers. Sea and rail transportation, fishing, agriculture, and manufacturing also play large roles.
There were gold mines in Maryland, even near Washington DC, though these have long since been exhausted. The high urbanization of the state ensures there are several large population centers, where most of the best gold and silver dealers in Maryland can be found. Baltimore, especially, hosts many top coin shops and bullion dealers.
Are There Taxes on Buying Gold and Silver Bullion in Maryland?
There is a sales tax exemption for buying gold and silver in Maryland. The law states that purchases of precious metals bullion or coins are exempt from tax, as long as the purchase price is at least $1,000. The law defines precious metal bullion as highly refined metal, where the worth of the item is from its metal content, not its form. Bullion coins that are monetized (have a face value) are also included in the exemption. Please note, there are many numismatic products that are not covered by this exemption, such as coins not made from precious metals, numismatic items that are not legal tender, such as tokens, and paper currency. All such items, as well as bullion and coin purchases under $1,000, are all subject to the Maryland sales tax rate of 6%.
