Colorado is known as the Centennial State, as it was granted statehood in 1876 — 100 years after the US Declaration of Independence. Colorado has had a long and involved history with mining. Copper, lead, uranium, gold and silver mining have all been big industries in Colorado. Today, the economy of Colorado is much more diverse, including tourism, government services, manufacturing, and health care.
Colorado has a large population, especially the Denver metropolitan area. To serve this population, there are many top gold and silver dealers in Colorado. Friendly tax laws make buying silver and gold bullion in Colorado less expensive than in some other states.
Are There Taxes on Buying Gold and Silver Bullion in Colorado?
Retail sales of bullion and coins are not subject to state sales taxes in Colorado. The section of the law titled “Sales Tax Exemptions for Coins and Precious Metal Bullion” directly states that such sales of coin and bullion are exempt from the state sales tax rate of 2.9%. This exemption extends to local and county sales taxes, as well. The law exempts coins that are, or have been used as legal tender in the United States or any other nation. Bullion (gold, silver, platinum, palladium, and rhodium) is exempt if the total value of the bullion is derived only from the content of precious metals contained within the product.
Certain numismatic coins and collectibles, such as tokens and jewelry, do not fall under this exemption, as they do not meet either of the definitions above. When buying coins, bullion, or jewelry in Colorado, be sure to research if your purchases are taxable.
