Washintgon was granted statehood in 1889, and is currently the 13th most populous US State, though over 60% of Washington residents live in or near the Seattle metro area. Due to the mountains, Washington has a diverse climate and a widely-varied economy.

Given its large population, there are a large number of gold and silver dealers in Washington, especially in the Seattle and Spokane areas. The headquarters of the Northwest Territorial Mint is also based in Washington.

Are There Taxes on Buying Gold and Silver Bullion in Washington?

Although Washington has a high sales tax rate, under WAC 458-20-248 bullion and coin purchases are exempt. Specifically, the law states there shall be no sales taxes on “Sales of precious metal bullion and monetized bullion.” “Monetized Bullion” is defined as precious metals products that do not derive any value from their form, only the precious metal content. Eligible examples would be gold and silver bullion coins and bullion bars.

Numismatic coins and collectibles are still subject to sales taxes in Washington, especially if their form adds to their value, such as jewelry. Paper money is also still subject to sales tax in Washington. The current state sales tax rate in Washington is 6.5%, but areas also have additional local sales taxes. Seattle, notably, adds a 3% sales tax on top of the state sales tax. Because Washington has some of the highest sales tax rates in the country, many investors and collectors who reside in Washington prefer to buy coins and bullion online, where sales taxes can be avoided.

CBMint is not based in the state of Washington, so Washington residents do not have to pay any sales taxes when shopping with CBMint. Please feel free to Browse our Selection of tax-free bullion products. WAC 458-20-248 can be read in detail here:

Please note, we are not tax professionals or experts. Individuals are sometimes liable to pay local Use taxes. Contact your state and local tax authorities for all laws concerning taxes when buying bullion locally.
