North Dakota, formerly part of Dakota Territory, was given statehood in 1889. Until the 1970s, the economy of North Dakota was centered around agriculture. Though still playing a huge role, mineral and raw material extraction, especially oil, has skyrocketed as of late. North Dakota is now one of the leader producers of crude oil in the entire United States, and the booming economy has transformed the character of the state.

Though gold was found in North Dakota for a brief period, the state is not a substantial producer of gold and silver. Nevertheless, the residents of North Dakota have a long history of investing in gold and silver bullion, and, despite the relatively small population of the state, several top coin, gold, and silver dealers are scattered around the state.

Are There Taxes on Buying Gold and Silver Bullion in North Dakota?

North Dakota does not have sales taxes on most purchases of bullion products, coins, and paper monies. Specifically, the North Dakota tax code provides a sales tax exemption for sales of currency and coin that are legal tender in the United States or a foreign nation. The exemption also applies to buying precious metal bullion in North Dakota. However, the tax law only exempts precious metal bullion that has a fineness of at least .999, so many bullion products are not exempt from sales tax under this law. Such bullion products, along with numismatic items such as tokens, medallions, and other collectibles, are subject to the state sales tax of 5%, along with any local and county taxes that may apply.

CBMint is not based in North Dakota and North Dakota residents do not have to pay any sales taxes when buying bullion online from CBMint.  Please feel free to Browse our Selection of tax-free bullion products. Overall, the sales tax laws on coins and gold and silver bullion are friendly in North Dakota. The applicable tax law can be read in more detail here:
