North Carolina is a fast-growing state on the US eastern seaboard. Its economy formerly centered around tobacco and other agriculture. Lately, however, the economy of North Carolina has diversified, with finance, biotechnology, energy, and engineering occupying larger shares of the economy. The western part of the state is mountainous, and in the past attempts to mine silver and gold took place here. Indeed, the first gold mined in the United States occurred here, and continued until 1828.
The state’s ties to precious metals continue today. Though no mining takes place, the large population ensures there are several top gold and silver dealers in North Carolina, many of them in Charlotte and Raleigh, NC.
Curently, there is no tax exemption for buying gold and silver in North Carolina, nor for buying coins, paper money, other bullion, or numismatic items. All such purchases are subject to the North Carolina state sales tax rate of 4.75%. County and local sales and use taxes can increase this total even further. This fact stops many investors from buying physical gold and silver in North Carolina.

Most people do not realize that the first United States gold rush took place in the Carolinas. Gold was mined here until roughly the time of the US Civil War. The United States Mint established a branch in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1835, in order to mint gold coins from the gold that was being mined in the area. The Charlotte branch produced almost exclusively gold coins, from its founding until the beginning of the Civil War, when the mint closed. Gold coins minted at the Charlotte branch are extremely rare and valuable — they can be identified with their “C” mint mark.
