Massachusetts is a small New England state, yet is very densely populated. Manufacturing played a huge role in the state’s early history, but today the economy is more diversified, with insurance, financial services, education, government, health care, biotechnology, and tourism comprising the largest sectors.
The large population of the state ensures that there are several top gold and silver dealers in Massachusetts, especially in the Greater Boston area. Massachusetts ranks comparatively high in per-capita income, and many of the well-to-do residents of the state heavily invest in gold and silver bullion.
There are certain tax exemptions when you buy gold and silver in Massachusetts, as long as the total purchase price exceeds $1,000. Included in this exemption are rare coins of numismatic value, gold or silver bullion coins, and gold and silver tender of any nation which is traded and sold according to its value as a precious metal. Like several other states, Massachusetts makes an exception — gold and silver bullion products from South Africa and Namibia are not granted sales tax exemptions. Notably, the South African gold Krugerrand, a popular gold bullion coin, does not qualify for a tax exemption. Other numismatic items like tokens, medallions, and paper currencies, also do not qualify. Note that only gold, and silver bullion are specified — there is no tax exemption if you buy platinum or palladium bullion in Massachusetts.
The total purchase price must also reach at least $1,000; if you buy numismatic coins, or gold or silver bullion in Massachusetts and the total price is lower, the exemption does not apply and your purchases are then taxed at the state rate of 6.25%. Local, county, or city sales and use taxes may raise that total even further.
