United States Mint — New Orleans Branch

The New Orleans branch of the United States Mint operated from 1838 – 1861, as well as from 1879 – 1909. It was closed during the US Civil War period, as well as during post-war reconstruction. During its years of operation, the branch produced over 427 million gold and silver circulation coins of every US denomination. The New Orleans branch was established at the same time as the Charlotte branch and the Dahlonega branch, in order to meet the increased need for circulating coinage caused, in part, by population growth, but also by certain fiscal policies initiated by then-President Andrew Jackson.
