Indiana was grated statehood in 1816. Though the smallest US state west of the Appalachian Mountains, Indiana is home to a large population and a diverse economy, including agriculture and food processing, steel production, electronics, transportation, and other manufacturing. The pharmaceutical industry also plays a large role in the economy of Indiana. Historically, gold and silver mining never played large roles.
Indiana has a large population, and there are a large number of top Indiana gold and silver dealers to serve this population. The largest metro area, Indianapolis, is home to many great coin shops and bullion dealers.
There is currently no sales tax exemption for buying gold and silver in Indiana. Coins, paper currency, all forms of precious metal bullion, and other numismatic items are also not exempt. Specifically, the law states that purchases of “gold, silver, or any other metal or alloy such as bullion, bars, ingots, or in any other shape, size, or condition” are all subject to the state sales tax of 7%. The law spells out exactly that buying coins in Indiana for more than the face value of the coin is considered a retail purchase, and is taxable. Stamps, exonumia, tokens, and jewelry are also fully subject to sales taxes in Indiana. Local districts may also add on additional taxes, increasing the cost of purchasing gold, silver, platinum, and coins in Indiana.
