What is present-day Connecticut was the first region in the US that was settled by Europeans. Today, Connecticut has the highest per capita income in the United States and is, therefore, often considered the wealthiest state. Historically, Connecticut was a center for manufacturing, especially firearms and shipping. Both Remington and Winchester were located in the state.
Investing in gold and silver bullion is popular among the affluent residents of the state, and there are many top gold and silver dealers in Connecticut to serve this population. New Haven and Bridgeport, especially, host many of the best coin and bullion dealers in Connecticut.
There are tax exemptions that apply when you buy silver and gold in Connecticut, along with certain coins and other precious metals bullion. The Connecticut sales tax laws regarding such purchases are rather complex, being dependent on both the types and amount of coins and precious metals purchased. Verbatim, the law gives a tax exemption for “Gold or silver bullion, legal tender of any nation, rare and antique coins. Sales of and the storage or use of rare or antique coins, gold or silver bullion and gold or silver legal tender of any nation, traded according to its value as precious metal, provided such exemption shall not be applicable with respect to any such sale, storage or use in which the total value of such bullion or legal tender sold by the retailer is less than one thousand dollars.”
Breaking that down, to be eligible for the exemption, the purchase must reach at least $1,000 in total. Additionally, coins are only exempt if they are legal tender coins of the US or a foreign nation, and bullion is only exempt if derives its value from the metal content and not its form. As a result, most Connecticut buyers looking to invest in gold and silver bullion, or rare coins, wait until they are ready to make a purchase exceeding $1,000, so they qualify for the exemption.
Please note — other forms of precious metal bullion, such as platinum, palladium, rhodium, or ruthenium, are not considered exempt under the law, as the law only specifically exempts silver and gold bullion. Paper currency, tokens, medallions, and other numismatic items that are not legal tender are also excluded. For all such purchases, the full Connecticut sales tax rate of 6% is applied. Certain county and local use and sales taxes can raise this even further.
