Liberty Head Gold Dollar (Type 1, Low Premium) 1849-1854
Please note -- $1 Gold Dollars are examples of historic United States coinage and are not to be confused with American Gold Eagles, which are modern, non-circulating gold coins produced primarily for buyers who invest in gold bullion.
The smallest gold coins made by the United States Mint, $1 Liberty Head Gold Dollars were put into production after the California Gold Rush increased the gold supply of the nation, allowing additional gold coins to be struck. Gold Dollar coins were made until 1889 and existed in three different designs. This listing is for Type 1 Gold Dollars, produced between 1849 and 1854. In the late 1800's, jewelers were apt to purchase Liberty Head Gold Dollars to use in pendants and necklaces, and the coin was often given as a holiday gift.
At the time, silver coinage did not circulate freely, as its melt value was often higher than its face value. Gold coins, however, freely circulated at this time, so the period before 1854 saw the most widespread use of $1 Gold Coins, and the high mintages of this time period is the reason why collectors have little trouble buying $1 Gold Dollar coins today.
