Indian Head Gold Quarter Eagle (MS 61+) 1908-1929
Final Design of $2.50 Gold Quarter Eagle Coin | Guaranteed MS-61 or Better Condition | Dates Chosen at Random from Our Inventory: 1908-1929
Please note -- the $2.50 Indian Head Gold Quarter Eagle is not to be confused with the new Quarter Ounce American Gold Eagle, which is a modern, non-circulating gold coin manufactured for buyers who invest in gold bullion.
Struck from 1908-1929, the $2.50 Indian Head Quarter Eagle was the last Quarter Eagle produced by the United States Mint. With the abandonment of the gold standard in 1933, a large number of gold Quarter Eagles were melted down by the US Treasury. Many of the surviving pieces returned to America from overseas, decades later.
Collectors buy gold Indian Head Quarter Eagles more than the earlier designs of Quarter Eagle, mainly due to the exotic incuse design. Incuse coinage is struck so that the design is sunk into the planchet, so that the flat surfaces of the coin are the highest points. The design was unpopular with the public (partly because of the fear of germs collecting in the recesses on the coin), but has become highly popular among collectors. Details of $2.50 Indian Head Gold Half Eagles
The Quarter Eagle has a similar design to the Indian Head Gold Half Eagle, both designed by Bela Lyon Pratt during the overhaul of American coinage in the early 20th century, and one of only two designs to be stamped in incuse. The obverse of the Indian Head Half Eagle shows an American Indian in profile wearing a feathered headdress, along with the mint date. Indian Head Gold Quarter Eagles are stamped in the common alloy of 10% copper and 90% gold.
The reverse shows a large eagle perched on a group of arrows which are wrapped in an olive branch. Mottos are stamped on the reverse, also in incuse.
