Texas is the second-largest US state in both terms of area and population. Texas has a huge and diverse economy, including extraction industries such as oil, gas, and coal. Defense and aerospace industries, government spending, manufacturing, transportation, and agriculture make up the most significant sectors of the economy of Texas. Historically, gold and silver were mined in Texas, and the state is still the home of NTR Metals.

The large population of Texas is rapidly growing and becoming increasingly urbanized, served by a large number of top gold and silver dealers in Texas, who buy and sell gold, silver, platinum, coins, and more from the ever-growing population.

Are There Taxes on Buying Gold and Silver Bullion in Texas?

Texas has an sales tax exemption for gold, silver, and platinum bullion purchases, as well as purchases of certain numismatic coins. The exemption only kicks in for purchases of at least $1,000, after the face value of any coins has been subtracted. The applicable Rule §3.336, “Gold, Silver, Coins, and Currency,”, can be read in full here:

https://www.sos.texas.gov/texreg/archive/May182018/Proposed%20Rules/34.PUBLIC%20FINANCE.html

Due to the $1,000 minimum purchase for the exemption to kick in, many Texas buyers looking to invest in gold and silver bullion wait until they are making larger purchases. Keep in mind that many numismatic items such as tokens, medallions, and paper currency, do not qualify for the exemption, even if the overall purchase amount meets the $1,000 threshold. All such purchases, as well as coin and bullion purchases under $1,000, are subject to the Texas state sales tax rate of 6.25% Many local jurisdictions also apply additional tax, which can bring the overall tax rate higher than 8% in some cases.
